Groundbreaking on a monumental water recycling project has taken place recently in Oceanside, California. The project, aptly named Pure Water Oceanside, aims to purify reclaimed water to provide safe, clean, and environmentally-friendly drinking water for the residents of Oceanside.
The $67 million project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021, at which time it will be capable of providing over 30% of Oceanside’s water supply. Currently, Oceanside imports most of its water from the Sacramento Bay Delta and the Colorado River, which is costly in terms of both money and energy. Once the Pure Water Oceanside project is complete, water will be sourced from the nearby San Luis Rey Water Reclamation Facility and put through a natural recycling process that will produce approximately 3-5 million gallons per day. The project will reduce the city’s dependency on imported water and provide a more sustainable option for the city’s residents.
Pure Water Oceanside’s water purification process is designed to replicate and accelerate the recycling process that normally takes place in nature. By combining the steps of microfiltration, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet light and advanced oxidation, and mineral injection, this process removes bacteria, viruses, salts, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and suspended solids from reclaimed water. After a final treatment at the city’s Mission Basin Groundwater Purification Facility, the reclaimed water is a safe and pure source of water for drinking and other uses.
By taking on the Pure Water Oceanside initiative, the city of Oceanside is taking major steps towards local water sustainability. Not only will this project reduce the city’s dependency on imported water, it will also provide a much more pure, local, and environmentally-friendly source of drinking water for its residents.
