Water may not be the only ingredient to washing a car to a spotless shine, but it’s a big ingredient. Carwash owners and homeowners alike monitor their water and sewer utility bills very closely to reduce expense and avoid wasting water. Many companies help carwash owners recycle and restore water and save money at their wash locations.

Water Restoration Systems
While a water reclaim system reduces odors and filters dirt and other suspended solids, chemicals like soaps, waxes and hydrocarbons remain in the water. This allows the operator to reuse the water at the beginning of the wash, e.g., in pre-soak, pre-rinse, undercarriage and other early stages of the wash.
A water restoration system is diferent, as explained by John Gibney, vice president and general manager of Aqua Bio Technologies: “In a water restoration system, the used vehicle wash water goes through the same aeration and cyclonic separation as a water reclaim system, but then goes through an added step: biologic consumption. The biologic consumption stage removes the remaining used wash chemicals out of the water, resulting in clean water that is able to be reused throughout the wash cycle. A Bio Complete water restoration system will produce water that can be used in 90% to 95% of the wash. With the recent breakthrough of the Bio Softreat system, a vehicle wash can now take it even one step further and use biologically restored water to feed a reverse osmosis system to make spot-free rinse water!”
Chuck Howard, owner and CEO of Autobell Car Wash, spoke by phone about Aqua Bios’ systems. “A while ago, we were working on a location in a developing area and the property didn’t have sewer access, so we needed to find a vendor that could provide a closed-loop reclaim system. Benefits
Several carwash customers report savings on process water and on sewer expenses. Craig Eilers, western sales manager for Aqua Bio Technologies, says, “Localities vary on their zoning, regulation and municipal utility charges. In places where water and sewer rates are high, it can benefit businesses to look at ways to reduce water use and sewer discharges.” The Bio Complete Water Restoration system will allow customers to reuse 90 to 95% of the wash water in the carwash operations.
Howard notes, “The system works very well. We have the ability to wash cars using over 100 gallons of process water with only 8 gallons of makeup water from the utility. We also have a clean wash bay and equipment equal to the freshwater system. Our favorite features using Aqua Bio are no odors, clear process water and low TDS (total dissolved solids). And our tunnel interiors are cleaner because there is no chemical residue that can build up and make the equipment and windows dirty. Also, that helps reduce our maintenance costs.”
Howard adds, “Aqua Bio is a good company with a complete system. We have installed the systems in all new builds and in some retrofits— about 34 locations.”
