As water supplies become scarcer and scarcer around the world, the need to recycle wastewater is becoming more apparent. This affects not only the regions that we commonly identify as being water-deprived, such as the Middle East and North Africa, but also areas of the world such as Europe where 11 percent of the population suffers from water shortages.
With climate change further reducing the supply of usable water, many countries have turned to wastewater recycling as a solution for their water scarcity problems. Normally, the treatment of wastewater includes cleaning it and removing nutrients, then releasing it back into rivers and lakes. By harnessing this wastewater instead for purposes such as agriculture and landscape irrigation, less fresh water needs to be taken from the environment. Currently, less than 1 percent of wastewater around the world is reused for such purposes.
The cost of recycling wastewater is seen as a huge barrier to more efficient water use. Water treatment plants are an expensive, but necessary component of freeing wastewater of nutrients that disrupt the water cycle. Despite the cost, many countries and regions of the world, including the European Union, have made water recycling a priority. For example, in just ten years, the country of Greece has gone from recycling 10 percent of its wastewater to treating 89 percent of it for reuse.
Despite small victories throughout the world, wastewater recycling still has a long journey ahead. Currently, 80 percent of wastewater across the world is returned to the environment without any sort of treatment. Given the fact that clean, fresh water is available in such short supply, we cannot afford to continue these wasteful water practices.
