Large corporations, including Microsoft and Google, have taken major strides in the last few years to become more eco-friendly. This year, Microsoft has announced that it plans to not only become carbon negative by 2030, but to also become water positive by the same year. This sets a goal for the company of replenishing more water than it uses.
At its newest campus in Silicon Valley, water conservation and recycling is a top priority. 100 percent of the non-potable water (water not meant for drinking) will be sourced through rainwater collection and waste water treatment. Microsoft also plans to use recycled water at its other campuses for a variety of purposes, including landscaping and plumbing.
Microsoft also intends to expand its water conservation efforts beyond its own campuses. By educating others about water conservation and recycling, and partnering with organizations that provide clean drinking water to communities without access, Microsoft will help in the fight for responsible water use.
Earlier this year, Facebook also announced plans to decrease its own water usage, using less water for cooling data centers and replenishing a certain level of water supplies every year. If this water conservation and recycling trend continues, and large corporations continue to get onboard with conservation efforts, we may be one step closer to being able to provide access to clean, safe water for many generations to come.
